Peace Hills Insurance Announces Four-Year Commitment to the FRAMS ISMI Program
Back in 2014, the Peace Hills Insurance Board of Directors committed to a four-year sponsorship of the Friends of the Royal Alberta Museum Society (FRAMS) Indigenous Student Museum Internship (ISMI) Program. Today, we are pleased to announce that we have revived this pledge, committing to another $17,000 over the next four years with this meaningful initiative in our community.
Established in 1998, the ISMI program offers First Nations, Metis, and Inuit students a paid 16-week internship at the Royal Alberta Museum (RAM) to further develop their career goals in the fields of cultural and natural heritage. Every summer, a group of interns gains hands-on experience working in the field or behind the scenes – actively learning from and contributing to the RAM. The program has created new links between the museum and First Nations communities, enabling the RAM to train First Nations peoples in all phases of museology, a key recommendation issued by the Assembly of First Nations and the Canadian Museums Associations.
"We are so excited to be supporting this powerhouse program again," said Kathy Boychuk, President & CEO of Peace Hills Insurance. "FRAMS has done a tremendous job of linking the RAM, one of Canada's leading heritage institutions, with our community through education programs for Indigenous post-secondary students. As an Indigenous-owned entity, Peace Hills Insurance is proud to align with the ISMI Program in particular, as it has been integral in encouraging the museum as a cultural resource for Indigenous people."
Since ISMI was established, over 50 Indigenous post-secondary students have worked at the RAM, contributing immeasurably to the museum’s curatorial and educational programming, as well as to conservation and collections management.
